Oceana Talks

Oceana County, this is your social network.

In a video on the Oceana's Herald Journal website city officials are discussing three questions they'd like to ask the residents about the office of Police Chief.

Log in and write your answers to their questions.
1. What qualities are you looking for in a Police Chief?
2. What would you expect the PC to accomplish in the first year of office?
3. How could the PC make the police department more effective?
And we'll add...
4. Anything else?

1) The qualities in our new PC should be: certified by MCOLES; degree in Criminal Justice/public administration; professional but approachable; able to maintain good boundaries; prior law enforcement experience with an excellent service record; physically fit (pass PE test - ALL officers should!); prior experience working in rural community and with developing police protocol and policies to state standards; excellent communication skills (verbal and written); ability to make difficult decisions; work well with others of different or diverse backgrounds; completion of a thorough background check (criminal and personnel).

2) The PC should work on cohesiveness and professionalism within the department; development of a policy and procedure manual for the police department mandating ethical standards for each officer; bring the department up to MCOLES standards in regards to service, fitness and ethical standards for each and every officer; job descriptions!

3) Develop and implement policy and procedures, employee regulations for when on-duty (no "hanging out" at sporting events, talking on cell phones while driving, playing computer games, etc). Be visible and approachable.

4) The PC will need to have good judgement and thick skin. They will need fortitude to work with a council that is in flux and disorganization. The PC should have good discernment when it comes to any personal agenda's of those who work for them and for those they work for (i.e. council members). Ability to stand firm when confronted with "we have always done it this way..." when implementing changes to the department.

I think Chuck Schultz should be nominated. Who else has gave so much for this little town of Shelby? These young guns are just plain out to make a name for them selves.. I think alot of people agree with this, too. Am I right, Shelby?

1 We are looking for the council to reinstate our chief Bob Wilson because he has the qualities this town needs

2 Straighten everything out that french goofed up.

3 We had a good police department before Glover, Lessons, Garcia & Cederquist screwed everything up so lets get our police department back and start healing. reinstate OUR Chief Bob.

What qualities do you need. Bob was here for 30+ years and we had no trouble. then a group of trouble makers came in and they were on a power trip and fired Bob for no reason. reinstate Bob Wilson. I don't mean rehire him I mean reinstate him with all his benifits. if people want this town to heal we need to reverse the wrongs that have been done.

REINSTATE BOB WILSON

We want someone who knows the people in the town of Shelby, and we would like to see either Bob Wilson or Chuck in as our Chief. We don't need some BIG WIG from some other area taking our a town they know nothing about... Please do all of us right by putting in the RIGHT PERSON that everyone knows, and gets along with....

1) a new PC should be someone from outside this village, that way they are no personal feeling to complicate a job! Certified MCOLES, a law enforcement degree, and complete criminal/background check! These are the minimum that my Tax Dollars should pay for!!!!!

2) get the police dept. MCOLES certified! we deserve the best!!!

3) A PC needs to come in here with an iron fist and get this town back on track- good luck to whom ever gets the job, you'll not only be facing police issues in this town but a mob of white trash and a council that is on a power trip!

That council was voted out November 4th - where have you been?

I think now that our Mighty Great Chief of Police Tim French squirmed out of town it's time to put Bob Wison back where he belongs. I hope the old council is proud of their choice of the man to lead our town because he showed his true colors. Let's get down to business and put Shelbly back on the map as a good village to live in and one to be proud of. Bring Bob back and we'll get on with business!!
